Updates on Fall 2021 and Strategic Plan

Dear Families,

I hope that this message finds you and your family doing well. As this very unique school year comes to a close, I wanted to thank our staff and the entire community for their flexibility, adaptivity, empathy, and creativity this year. We were the first school district in Los Angeles County to reopen our doors to students, offered a brand new Virtual Academy to our students, and found ways to problem solve, pivot, and troubleshoot when challenges arose. While I acknowledge that there were many challenges that emerged, I couldn’t be more proud of how our district staff and our students with your support worked to make this the best year possible.

I am optimistic and enthusiastic about the future. We will be reopening our schools for full-time on-campus instruction this Fall. Our Board is unanimously behind this direction and we are already deep in the planning stages of how to not only offer a full return to school but a return with expansive and equitable opportunities for our students to grow and accelerate their learning. We are currently in the process of working with a multi-stakeholder Strategic Planning Committee to develop a plan to use one-time Federal and State grants to expand learning and social-emotional support for families. Currently, this plan involves the following exciting elements to support our students and staff:

  • Targeted class size reduction

  • Expanded Summer Learning

  • Expanding K-12 School Library Hours

  • Beginning of Year Boost Camps

  • Extending the School Year

  • Full-Time Intervention Teachers K-12

  • Elementary and Summer Counselor Expansion

  • Art & Music Teachers at Elementary

  • Professional Development for ELA and Math

  • Technology Hardware and Infrastructure Upgrades (laptop refresh)

The Strategic Plan will be approved in late May by our Board of Education and more details about these elements will be shared thereafter.

Some additional updates:

  • CAASPP Testing: We value gathering data on student achievement to target resources for support to our students. LVUSD currently administers quarterly assessments for academic readiness and social-emotional needs. In early May we will be administering the CAASPP assessment to gather important data about our students to inform our plans ahead.

  • End of Year Activities: Our schools are working on developing in-person end-of-year activities. For our graduating seniors, these include an on-campus graduation ceremony, modified prom, senior picnic, and movie nights that all follow current guidelines for Health and Safety. Virtual Academy students will be able to participate in all of these events. We are thrilled to have this opportunity to celebrate our students and to allow them time with their classmates.

In short, we:

  • Are working tirelessly to ensure a fun, smooth, and safe end to this year.

  • We are planning for a full and exciting return to campus this Fall.

  • We are developing a robust strategic plan that will expand support resources, enrichment, and counseling for families.

Many more details to come soon. Thank you for all of your support.
