Jennifer Mettler Named the 2019 Western District Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year!
Las Virgenes Unified School District teacher Jennifer Mettler has been named the 2019 Western District Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year by SHAPE America (Society of Health and Physical Educators). The Western District represents Alaska, Arizona, California, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. Individuals who have been named District Teachers of the Year are eligible for a National Teacher of the Year award. 2019 National Teachers of the Year will be announced in early 2020.
Jennifer has taught physical education at A.C. Stelle Middle School for 15 years. She is the 2018 CAHPERD (California Association of Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance) Middle School Teacher of the Year and her school’s physical education program is a former CAHPERD program of the year.
In 2009, she became a National Board Certified Teacher and renewed her certification in 2019. As a strong voice for wellness and quality physical education for all students, she has advocated at the local, state, and national level, even lobbying on Capitol Hill. Jennifer has worked with the California Subject Matter Projects for Health and Physical Education and also has been part of the Community Transformation Grant with LA Public Health.
She has provided professional development on physical education and wellness throughout California. Currently, she is part of the organizing team for the California Statewide Physical Education Assessment Project pilot.
Jennifer states, “Being surrounded by such amazing professionals, parents, support staff, and students is what inspires me to provide an environment that will create successful, healthy, and physically active children.”
