Principal’s Message

In the month of September we ask the question, how do I value the differences in our community? As we move into Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) we get to begin to share and celebrate all our unique stories. Last week I spoke a bit about what HHM is and this week we blast off into our celebrations. Join us every Friday as we wear our HHM celebratory gear (think blouses, shirts, jerseys) and our Sumac gear as well.

We lean into this month's cultural theme with connections in our classrooms.
  • Students will develop language and historical and cultural knowledge that affirm and accurately describe their membership to multiple identity groups.

Next week we have two exciting school-wide events: Picture Day and our first restaurant night to support Sumac. Please read below for details.

Have a great weekend Voyagers!

PICTURE DAY WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22

This is a friendly reminder that picture day is WEDNESDAY.  Please encourage your student to attend dressed their best, the way they want to be remembered!  The portrait taken on this day will be used for their yearbook picture and portrait package if purchased.  Remember, our program is contactless.  There is no payment required ahead of time.  In approximately 2 weeks, you will be emailed a link to view and order your portrait online.  All orders will be shipped directly home.

School portraits have been a long-standing tradition for more than 100 years, serving as a pictorial documentation of a student’s academic growth. During this time of Covid-19, Cornerstone Photography is fighting to ensure that the memories of our children live on.  Long after cell phone photos are gone, you will still have your children’s school portraits, to be viewed by their children and their grandchildren.  We appreciate your efforts to help keep the cherished tradition of school portraiture and the yearbook publication alive.

Have you met our new and additional Interventionist, Mrs. Rivera? Coming to us with a wealth of experience from Moorpark Unified, we are excited to have her help each day supporting reading and writing across all grade levels. Bienvenido, Sra. Rivera a la comunidad de Sumac.

TK- Kindergarten- Have been working hard at learning to playgroup games as one big team.
1st-2nd grades- Are enjoying learning new group games that focus on teamwork and strategies.
3rd-5th grades- Continuing our month-long focus on teamwork. This week we focused our games and warm-ups on the 3 T's: thinking, timing, and teamwork.

This week we connect to our best selves by complimenting ourselves on our artwork!  “Well done, self!” For Hispanic Heritage Month, we will be learning about the handwork from Hispanic countries. Students continue learning the Elements of Art.  This week’s focus is on COOL & WARM colors.  We also learned the difference in techniques for painting with paint and ceramic glaze. The thicker glaze requires more of a “dab” than a “stroke” technique.
In Artes Escénicas we are identifying our emotions and applying breathing techniques. To introduce Hispanic Heritage Month we are playing instruments to the rhythm of Celia Cruz's Salsa Music. We are applying rhythm by dancing and playing instruments. We enhance Spanish vocabulary and pronunciation by singing and reading.

Mrs. Stratton welcomed the rest of the Sumac classes into the library this week. As we introduce Hispanic Heritage Month our main message to all our students is: All are welcome here. Students are learning how to work within our library community.
Have a great weekend Sumac!
