    Chicken Soup

    POEMS FOR UNIT 3

    September
    In September, for a while
    I will ride a crocodile
    Down the chicken soupy Nile
    Paddle once, paddle twice
    Paddle chicken soup with rice!
–Maurice Sendak, from Chicken Soup with Rice

    October
    In October, I'll be host
To witches, goblins and a ghost!
I'll serve them chicken soup on toast.
    Whoopy once, whoopy twice,
    Whoopy chicken soup with rice!
–Maurice Sendak, from Chicken Soup with Rice

    Sword of George
    Sword of George brightly gleaming

Down to Earth its light is streaming
May we see its shining rays,
    In the winter's darkest days.

    CIRCLE FOR UNIT 3

The sun is shining; the sky is blue,
Let’s go to the castle, you come, too!
But first call our pony, so strong and so true,
He’ll take us there, that he can do.Pony, pony, pony!

Now we’re ready, here we go!
Come little pony, don’t be slow!

On my mighty fine pony, I walk, I walk.
On my mighty fine pony, I walk, I walk.
On my mighty fine pony, I trot, I trot.
On my mighty fine pony, I trot, I trot.
On my mighty fine pony, I gallop, I gallop.
On my mighty fine pony, I gallop, I gallop.
On my mighty fine pony, I trot, I trot.
On my mighty fine pony, I trot, I trot.
On my mighty fine pony, I walk, I walk.
On my mighty fine pony, I stand straight and tall

I’ll be a knight of the castle too and polish my sword to a golden hue,
Ask the gnomes the iron to mine, and with my shovel, I’ll dig three times!
Iron from stars to earth so fine,
To take to the blacksmith who with all his might,
Will make me a sword so strong and so bright.
And I said, “Dear blacksmith will you make me a sword?”
    “Of course,” he said.

I am the blacksmith, brave and true
Best of work I always do,
All day long my hammering goes,
    Clinging, clanging, clinging so
    Rickety tickety tickety tack
    Rickety tickety tickety tack

Thank you dear blacksmith for all your might,
I’ll polish my sword so strong & so bright.
Now off to the castle we must go, come little pony, here we go.

Galloping, galloping off we go, off to the castle, don’t be slow!
Galloping, galloping off we go, off to the castle, don’t be slow!

    Whoaaa…

And when all of the knights gathered together at the castle they pledged:

Brave and true will I be, each good deed sets me free,
Each kind word makes me strong.
I will fight for the right! I will conquer the wrong!

And as the brave, young lad George stepped out from the castle gate,
The knights raised their swords to the sky, and said:

    “Sword of George, brightly gleaming,
Down to earth it’s light is streaming.
May we see its shining rays,
    In the Winter’s darkest days.”

Now we open wide our hearts,
Of this great world we all are part,
Whether at work, or sleep or play
Be with us golden sun this day.
