Dr. Steve Scifres
Assistant Superintendent Personnel

A lifelong member of the Las Virgenes Unified community since his first day of school as a student at White Oak Elementary, Mr. Scifres has served in various roles in Las Virgenes since 2005. Most recently, he was the Director of Curriculum and Athletics for Las Virgenes Unified. In this role, Mr. Scifres facilitated three separate K-12 curriculum adoptions in the disciplines of ELA, History-Social Science, earned distinguishment as ACSA’s 2019 Curriculum and Instruction Administrator of the Year, and oversaw all LVUSD TK-5 education. 

Prior to that, Mr. Scifres served as the principal of Bay Laurel Elementary School in Calabasas.  Mr. Scifres was instrumental in furthering the school’s positive climate with staff and students, made evident in an increase in student perception of safety and positive adult relationships in recent Health Child Survey results.

Before becoming an elementary school principal, Mr. Scifres taught English at Agoura High School and spent time coaching both the boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams. At Calabasas High School he worked as the Vice Principal and oversaw the performing arts program, ASB student government, and led various other instructional and intervention leadership projects.

Mr. Scifres is in the final year getting his doctorate through the Graduate School of Education and Psychology at Pepperdine University where he earned both his Master of Arts in Education & Teaching Credential, and his Master of Science in Administration and Preliminary Administrative Services Credential. He graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.  Mr. Scifres plans to have all of his doctoral work completed by May of 2021. 

As Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, Mr. Scifres ensures that the District has the personnel to effectively complete the vision of the board of education and success of our students.  Ensures that the personnel are appropriately supported, guided, and accountable for ensuring our students are successful. In addition, he Researches and provides appropriate professional development for administrators.  Finally, Mr. Scifres works collaboratively with employees, management, and the community to foster a positive climate within the Las Virgenes Unified School District.  


The Personnel Department staff hires, develops and motivates employees who will be responsible for the achievement of the District’s goal of excellence in education and outstanding citizenship. They work with staff members to assist them in reaching their highest potential. This begins with recruitment and selection of highly trained 21st century communicators, matching their skills with the District’s needs, and ensuring they get appropriate feedback and training. The Personnel Department ensures effective two-way communication with all employee groups and facilitates the collective bargaining process.
