*Students who are appealing placement into Honors English Language Arts and/or Social Studies in 6th Grade have another opportunity to demonstrate their writing ability on a prompt that will be given at the District Office on May 29 and June 1. Students will read one or more brief information texts and be asked to write an opinion (persuasive) argument, based on the arguments put forth in the reading. Below are the exemplary criteria expected of honors-level student writers.

BACKGROUND
In the spring of 2012, the Board of Education for the Las Virgenes Unified School District approved a plan to address how best to identify and serve both the gifted and high-achieving students in middle school. These changes are being implemented over a three-year period, beginning in 2012-13. (See the chart below.)
The Board approved for the 2012-2013 school year that 7th and 8th grade GATE students would meet their Language Arts requirements through performance-based Honors classes. To be inclusive, these classes will also be available to any students excelling in regular classes, who are recommended by a teacher or the school’s Honors committee.
In the 2013-2014 school year, the District will open a self-contained Gifted Magnet classroom for 6th grade only at A.E.
Wright Middle School. Although the original proposal included 6th and 7th grade, the GATE Committee has recommended that in the first year of the program, the self-contained classroom be limited to one grade level.
For the 2014-2015 school year, the Gifted Magnet program will extend to 6th and 7th grade, with 8th grade being added in 2015-2016.
